QuestionAnswer
rock cycle The series of processes in which a rock forms changes from one type to another is destroyed and forms again by geological processes.
rock A naturally occurring solid mixture of one or more minerals or organic matter.
erosion The process by which wind ,water ice, or gravity transports soil and sediment from one location to another.
uplift Is movement within the earth that causes rocks inside the earth to be moved to the earth's surface.
deposition The process in which material is laid down.
composition The chemical makeup of a rock describes either the minerals or other materials in the rock.
texture The quality of a rock that is based on the sizes, shapes, and positions of the rock's grains.
Intrusive igneous rock Rock formed from the cooling and solidification of magma beneath the Earth's surface.
extrusive igneous rock Rock that forms as a result of volcanic activity at or near the Earth's surface.
lava flow When lava erupts from a volcano.
mafic rock Are rich in calcium, iron, and magnesium, ans poor in silicon.
plutons Are large, irregular-shape intrusive bodies.
batholiths The largest of all igneous intrusion.
dikes Sheet like intrusion that cut across previous rock units.
sills Are sheet like intrusion that are oriented parallel to previous rock units.
strata Layers of rock
stratifcation The process in which sedimentary rocks are arranged in layers
organic sedimentary rock Skeletons of sea animals which are made of carbonate collect on the sea floor.
fossiliferous limestone These animals remains eventually become cemented together.
ripple marks Sedimentary rocks record motion of wind and water waves on lakes, oceans, rivers, and sand dunes in features.
mud cracks Structures form when fine-grained sediments at the bottom of a shallow body of water are exposed to air and then dry out.
Foliated The texture of metamorphic rock in which the mineral grains are arranged in planes or bands.
nonfoliated The texture of metamorphic rock in which the mineral grains are not arranged in planes or bands.
Deformation Is a change in the shape of a rock cause by a force placed on it.
metamorphism Occurs near igneous intrusions.
contact meta Occurs near igneous intrusions.
regional meta When large pieces of the earth's crust collide with each other.
index minerals Are used to estimate the temperature, depth, and pressure at which a rock undergoes metamorphism.
recrtstallization During metamorphism the crystals of these minerals may change in size or the mineral may change in composition.
magma Hot liquid rock.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
