| volcano | a mountain that has a vent containing magma or lava that came from earths crust |
| lava | hot molten rock that has flown from a volcano |
| magma | a hot fluid below or within earths crust that is formed by the cooling of lava |
| ring of fire | a major area around the pacific rim where lots of volcanoes and earthquakes happen |
| hotspot | a small area with a hot tempature |
| Shield volcano | a broad domed volcano with gently sloping sides |
| Cinder cone volcano | a steep conical hill shaped like a cone |
| composite volcano | is also called stratovolcano and is built with layers of hardened lava |
| sill | a tabular sheet of igneous rock intruded between and parallel with the existing data |
| dike | an intrusion of igneous cutting through exiting strata |
| batholith | a very large igneous intrusion extending deep in the earths crust |
| lava plateau | is a large flat high area of land filled with lava |
| extinct | is dead or not living anymore |
| dormant | has been asleep for along time but can wake up |
| active | is living and alive |
| Volcanic Ash | explosive eruption products known as tephera |
| magma chamber | is a large underground pool of liquid rock beneath earths crust |
| crater | a large bowl in a volcano |
| vent | is a large opening in a volcano where lava comes out |
| pipe | is a horizontal opening where lava comes out |
| caldera | a huge crater caused by the collapsing of the mouth of a volcano |
| hot spring | is formed by heated groundwater coming up to the crust |
| geyser | a hot spring that boils all the time and sometimes sends a tall column of water |
| compound | a thing that is composed of two or more separate elements |
| element | a substance that can't be decomposed into simpler subtances |
