Volcano's

TermDefinition
1. volcano Is a weak spot in the crust where molten material, or magma, comes to the surface
2. lava When this liquid substance reaches the surface it becomes magma
3. magma A molten mixture of rock- forming substances, gases, and water from the mantle
4. ring of fire One major volcanic belt formed by many volcanoes that rim the pacific ocean
5. hot spot An area where material from deep within the mantle rises then melts, forming magma
6. cinder cone volcano Cone-shaped mountain formed from ash, cinders, and bombs.
7. composite volcano Mountain formed by lava flows alternating with explosive eruptions.
8. dike Forms when magma forces itself across rock layers and hardens.
9. sill Forms when magma squeezes between layers of rock and hardens.
10. shield volcano Gently sloping mountain formed by repeated lava flows.
11. lava plateau High, level area formed by repeated lava flows.
12. batholith A massive rock formed when a large body of magma cool insides the crust.
13. active Erupting or showing signs of erupting in the near future
14. dormat A volcano that is not erupting but is likely to erupt againg
15. extinct Unlikely to erupt again
16.element A substance that can't be broken down into another substance
17.viscosity is the resistance of a liquid to flowing
18. silica a compound made up of particles of the elements oxygen and silicon
19.pahoehoe fast moving hot lava with a low viscosity
20.aa lava that is cooler and slow moving
21.compound is a substance made of two or more chemical elements are chemically combined
22.volcanic ash fine rocky particles as small as a speck of dust
23.magma chamber a pocket where magma collects
24.crater bowl shaped area that forms around a volcanoes central vent
25.vent an opening where magma leaves the volcano
26.pipe a long tube that connects the magma chamber to the earths surface
27.caldera large hole formed by when a volcanoes magma chamber empties or collapses
28.hotspring when ground water is heated by a near body of magma rises up to the surface and collects in a natural pool
29.geyser type of hot spring that erupts as a fountain of water and steam
