| Volcano | a weak spot in the crust where molten material, or magma, comes through the surface. |
| Lava | what magma is called when it reaches the surface |
| Magma | A molten mixture of rock-forming substances, gases, and water from the mantle |
| Ring of Fire | Formed by the many volcanoes that rim the pacific ocean |
| Hot spot | an area where material from deep within the mantle rises and melts forming magma |
| Shield volcano | Gentle sloping mountain formed by repeated lava flows. |
| Composite Volcano | Mountain formed by lava flows alternating with explosive eruptions. |
| Cinder-cone Volcano | Coned-shape mountain formed from ash, cinders, and bombs |
| sill | Slab that forms when magma squeezes between layers of rock |
| Dike | Slab that forms when magma forces itself across rock layer |
| Batholith | mass of rock formed when magma cooled inside the crust |
| lava plateau | High level area formed by repeated lava flowa |
| extinct | Unlikely to erupt again |
| dormant | sleeping (hasn't erupted in a while) |
| active | Erupting or showing signs of erupting in the near future |
| Element | a substance that cannot be broken down into other substances. |
| Viscosity | The resistance of a liquid to flowing |
| Silica | A compound made up of the elements oxygen and silicon |
| Pahoehoe | Fast moving hot lava that has low viscosity |
| AA | Lava that is cooler and slow moving |
| Compound | A substance made up of two or more elements |
| Magma Chamber | Location where lava, tephra, and gases are stored inside a volcano |
| Crater | Bowl-shaped area that forms around a volcano's central vent |
| Vent | An opening on the side or at the top of a volcano for lava to flow out of |
| Pipe | the tube that carries magma to the opening of a volcano |
| Caldera | Large hole formed when a volcano's magma chamber empties and collapses |
| Hot spring | When ground water heated by a near by body of magma rises to the surface and collects in a natural pool |
| Geysers | Type of hot spring that erupts as a fountain of water and steam |
