Volcanoes

QuestionAnswer
vocano is a weak spot in the crust where molten material, or magma, comes to the surface
Lava When magma reaches the surface
Magma A molten mixture of rock-forming substances, gases, and water from the mantle
Ring of Fire formed by the many volcanoes that rim the pacific ocean
Hot spot is an area where material from deep within the mantle rises & then melts forming magma.
shield volcano Gently sloping mountain formed by repeated lava flows
Composite Volcano Cone shaped mountain formed from ash cinders and bombs
Cinder cone Volcano Mountain formed by lava flows alternating with explosive eruptions
Sill forms when magma squeezes between layers of rock and hardness
Dike forms when magma forces itself across rock layers and hardens
Batholith When a large body of magma cools inside the crust a mass of rock called batholith forms
Lava plateau some eruptions of thin runny lava flow out of cracks and travel a long distance before cooling and hardening over millions of years these layers of lava build up over a large area to form a lava plateau
Extinct A volcano that is no longer active or that probably wont erupt again
Dormant A volcano that has not erupted in 200 years and is asleep but can erupt any moment
active A volcano that always has a chance of erupting or erupts or common for that volcano
element A substance that cannot be broken down into other substances
viscosity The physical property of liquids
silica made up of particles of the elements oxygen and silicon
pahoehoe fast moving hot lava that has low viscosity
AA Lava that is cooler and slower moving
compound A substance made of two or more elements that have been chemically combined
volcanic ash Fine rocky particles as small as a speck of dust
magma chamber A place underground that holds all of the magma and is connected to the pipe
crater A bowl shaped area that forms around a volcanoes central vent
vent A place where the lava comes out of the volcano
pipe A pipe connecting from the magma chamber to the vent
caldera When the top of a volcano blows up & inside sinks in & makes a bowl shaped hole the magma chamber empties out & the roof of the volcano foes inside the magma chamber
hotspring is an area where material from deep within the mantle rises & then melts, forming magma creating islands
