| 1. volcano | a weak spot in the crust where molten material, or magma comes to the surface |
| 2. lava | liquid magma that reaches the surface |
| 3. magma | a molten mixture of rock-forming substances, gases, and water from the mantle |
| 4. Ring of Fire | a major belt of volcanoes that rims the Pacific Ocean |
| 5. hot spot | an area where material from deep within the mantle rises and then melts, forming magma |
| 6. shield volcano | gently sloping mountain formed by repeated lava flows |
| 7. composite volcano | mountain formed by lava flows alternating with explosive eruptions |
| 8. cinder cone volcano | cone-shaped mountain formed from ash, cinders, and bombs |
| 9. sill | forms when magma squeezes between layers of rock and hardens |
| 10. dike | forms when magma forces itself across layers of rock and hardens |
| 11. batholith | a mass of rock formed when a large body of magma cools inside the crust |
| 12. lava plateau | high, level area formed by repeating lava flows |
| 13. extinct | a volcano that is unlikely to erupt again |
| 14. dormant | a volcano that is not currently active, but may become active in the near future |
| 15. active | a volcano that is erupting or showing signs of erupting in the near future |
| 16. element | a substance that cannot be broken down into other substances |
| 17. viscosity | the resistance of a liquid to flowing |
| 18. silica | a compound made up of particles of oxygen and silicon, it makes magma thicker |
| 19. pahoehoe | hot, fast moving lava |
| 20. aa | cool, slow moving lava |
| 21. compound | a substance made of two or mare elements that have been chemically combined |
| 22. volcanic ash | fine rocky particles as small as a a speck of dust |
| 23. magma chamber | a pocket of magma beneath the surface |
| 24. crater | a bowl-shaped area that may form at the top of a volcano around the central vent |
| 25. vent | an opening at the top of a volcano where molten rock and gas leave |
| 26. pipe | a long tube in the ground that connects the magma chamber to Earth’s surface |
| 27. caldera | a hole left by the collapse of a volcanic mountain |
| 28. hot spring | when ground water heated by a nearby body of magma rises to the surface and collects in a natural pool |
| 29. geyser | a fountain of water and steam that erupts from the ground |
