Weathering and Erosion
| Term | Definition |

| weathering | breakdown of rocks |
| erosion | transportation of weathered rocks |
| frost wedging | when temperature alternates between freezing and melting cracks expand in rocks causing them to break |
| exfoliation | outer layer of rocks are stripped away, dome shaped formations occur |
| mechanical weathering | weathering that does not change the rock's composition, it only changes the rock's size and shape |
| hydrolysis | when water reacts with another substance to cause a chemical change |
| oxidation | when oxygen reacts with a substance to cause a chemical change: rust |
| depostion | laying down of sediments and weathered matials |
| rill erosion | looks like small channels on the side of a slope caused from running water |
| gully erosion | an evolved type of rill erosion, gully: much larger channels |
| soil profile | a virticle sequence of soil layers |
| soil horizon | a distinct layer within a soil profile, there are 4 |
| chemical weathering | rocks and minerals undergo change in their chemical composition |
| soil | loose covering of weathered rock particles and decaying organic matter |
| residual soil | soil whose parent material is the local bedrock |
| transported soil | soil that develops from parent material that has been moved far from its original location |
