Weathering and Erosion

weathering breakdown of rocks
erosion transportation of weathered rocks
frost wedging when temperature alternates between freezing and melting cracks expand in rocks causing them to break
exfoliation outer layer of rocks are stripped away, dome shaped formations occur
mechanical weathering weathering that does not change the rock's composition, it only changes the rock's size and shape
hydrolysis when water reacts with another substance to cause a chemical change
oxidation when oxygen reacts with a substance to cause a chemical change: rust
depostion laying down of sediments and weathered matials
rill erosion looks like small channels on the side of a slope caused from running water
gully erosion an evolved type of rill erosion, gully: much larger channels
soil profile a virticle sequence of soil layers
soil horizon a distinct layer within a soil profile, there are 4
chemical weathering rocks and minerals undergo change in their chemical composition
soil loose covering of weathered rock particles and decaying organic matter
residual soil soil whose parent material is the local bedrock
transported soil soil that develops from parent material that has been moved far from its original location
