| seismic waves | vibrations that travel through Earth carrying energy released during an earthquake |
| crust | the layer of rock that forms Earth's outer surface |
| mantle | layer of hot, solid material between Earth's crust and core |
| lithosphere | rigid layer made up of the uppermost part of the mantle and the crust |
| asthenosphere | soft layer of the mantle on which the lithosphere floats |
| inner core | dense sphere of solid iron and nickel at Earth's center |
| outer core | layer of molten iron and nickel that surrounds the inner core |
| conduction | direct transfer of thermal energy between substances that are touching |
| density | amount of mass of a substance in a given volume; mass divided by volume |
| convection current | movement of a fluid caused by differences in temperature; transfers thermal energy from one part of the fluid to another part |
