| drama | a story written to be acted for an audience |
| tragedy | a play, novel, or other narrative that depicts serious and important events in which the main character comes to an unhappy end |
| prologue | a short intro at the beginning of a play that gives a brief overview of the plot |
| chorus | a group who says things at the same time |
| static character | a character who does not change much in the course of a story |
| dynamic character | a character who changes character as a result of the story events |
| aside | words spoken by a character in a play, usually in an undertone and not intended to be heard |
| blank verse | un-rhymed iambic pentameter |
| couplet | two consecutive lines of poetry that rhyme |
| iambic meter | unstressed syllable followed by a stressed syllable |
| iambic pentameter | five verse feet with each foot an iamb (a total of 10 syllables) |
| pun | the humorous use of a word or phrase to suggest two or more meanings at the same time |
| monologue | a long, uninterrupted speech presented in front of other characters |
| soliloquy | a speech in which a character is alone on stage and expresses thoughts put loud |
| sonnet | a fourteen lyric poem, usually written in iambic pentameter, that has one of several rhyme schemes. |
