| Luster | ability of a metal to reflect light |
| Ductility | ability to be pulled into thin wires |
| Malleability | ability of a substance to be hammered or rolled into sheets |
| Alkali Metal | the elements in group 1 (column 1) |
| Alkali Earth Metal | the elements in group 2 (column 2) |
| Transition Element | the elements in groups 3-12 (columns 3-12) |
| Nonmetal | elements that have no metallic properties |
| Halogen | An element in group 17 (column 17) |
| Noble Gas | the elements in group 18 (column 18) |
| Metalloid | Element that has physical and chemical properties of both metals and nonmetals |
| Semiconductor | conducts electricity at high temperatures, but not at low temperatures |
