Science test #2

TermDefinition
Ecology the study of living things and their environment
Ecosystem all organisms in an area and the place they live
Biotic +2 factors the living parts of an ecosystem Ex: plants and animals
Abiotic +6 factors the non living parts of an ecosystem Ex: sun, temperature, rocks and soil, climate, water cycle atmosphere
Producer 3 types of producers organisms that use energy from the sun or other chemical reactions to make their own food. Ex: plants, algae, and Cyanobacteria
Consumer (Some examples) Organisms that cannot make their own food Ex: animals and protozoans
Decomposers (Some examples) Organisms that break down dead animals, organisms, droppings, leaves, and other wastes produced by living things Ex: bacteria, protests, and insects
Photosynthesis a process that producers use to make their own food using energy from sunlight
What starts the energy flow? the sun
Herbivore (Some examples) Organisms that only eat plants Ex: rabbits, elephants, and caterpillars
Carnivore (Some examples) Organisms that only eat meat Ex: Venus fly trap, spiders, and sea anemones
Omnivore (Some examples) Organisms that feed on other animals and plants Ex: grizzly bears and raccoons
Scavenger (Some examples) Organisms that feed on dead animals Ex: crowd, vultures, and foxes
Food web A more complicated model of how energy flows. Consists of many overlapping food chains in an ecosystem
Energy pyramid shows how much energy is available that each type of consumer contains.
Food chain a series of events in which one organism eats another and obtains energy. It shows how energy flows in one ecosystem.
Trophic levels the position an organism occupies in a food chain
3 biomes if California the desert, chaparral, and temperate deciduous forest
Water cycle the process by which water moves through the environment
Condensation the part of the water cycle of when gas turns into a liquid
Precipitation rain sleet hail or snow
Evaporation/transformation when water transforms into gas and evaporation also purifies water
Carbon cycle Describes how carbon moves between the living and non living environment
Nitrogen cycle describes how nitrogen moves from the atmosphere to the soil to living organisms and back to the atmosphere
Prey an animal that is hunted and killed for by another
Predators an animal that naturally preys on others

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
