Earthquake Vocab

focus words

TermDefinition
Fault This is the crack in the surface of the Earth where earthquakes occur.
latitude These lines run east to west and measure degrees north or south of equator.
plates The earth is divided into several sections called_.
magnitude This is a measure of the force of the earthquake.
seismograph It is a tool to determine how strong an earthquake.
earthquake This is agitation and shaking that occurs when rock is released below the surface moves and energy.
longitude These lines run north to south and measure degrees east and west of the meridian of Greenwich.
plate boundary This is the area between two plates. Here, the rock can join to form mountains, separate or slide over one another.
tsunami A long, high sea wave caused by an earthquake.
p waves (primary waves) These waves are the first to be released from an earthquake. They travel in stratight lines.
s waves (secondary waves) These waves travel side to side and are released second
