| republic | a system of government in which officials are chosen by the people |
| patrician | a member of the landowning upper class in ancient Rome |
| plebeian | a member of the lower class in ancient Rome |
| consul | a powerful patrician ruler in the Roman Republic |
| tribune | one of a group of officials chosen by the plebeians to protect their interests in the Roman Republic |
| veto | the power of one Roman consul to block an action by the other consul |
| arbitrary | making decisions based on whim, impulse or personal feeling |
| forum | the center of Roman cities; location of major government and religious buildings |
| legion | the Roman army |
| diplomacy | the act of negotiating with foreign nations |
| imperialism | the policy of acquiring foreign territories in order to form an empire |
| latifundia | a Roman estate |
| Pax Romana | the peace of Rome |
| aqueduct | a large, stone bridge structure used to carry water |
| catacomb | an underground cemetery |
| hierarchy | a system of ranks of authority |
| diocese | a district under the authority of a bishop |
| heresy | a false teaching which contradicts the official teachings of the church |
| barbarian | a person living outside the boundaries of the Roman Empire |
| writing process | the step-by-step method for writing a paper to ensure quality |
| prewriting | the stage in the writing process wherein a writer gathers ideas |
| drafting | the stage in the writing process where the writer is actually writing |
| revising | the process of making changes to a paper so as to create a better flow of ideas or to correct mistakes in information |
| editing | the process of making changes to a paper so as to fix errors in English conventions: spelling, grammar, punctuation and capitalization |
| verb tense | the form of a verb that indicates when something happens (past, present, future, past perfect, present perfect, future perfect) |
| tense shifting | changing verb tenses within a paper (past tense to present tense) when it does not make sense to do so |
| coefficient | A number used to multiply a variable. |
| like terms | Terms that have the same variables in the same form or in equvalent forms so that the terms represent the same number. |
| exponent | The number that indicates how many times a number is to be multiplied. |
| right solid | A geometric solid whose sides are at 90 degree angles to the bases. |
