BIOL 1103

Kelly's Stack week 1

QuestionAnswer
Describe the 3 cellular processes involved in the growth of the human body from a fertilized egg to an adult. (blank)
Describe the GOLGI APPARATUS and it's functions. Stack of flattened membranous sacs. FUNCTION: modify + package proteins made in the ER for export from the cell. (Golgi the garbage packer)
Describe the LYSOSOMES and their functions. Small sacs bound by membrane, contain digestive enzymes. FUNCTION: enzymes inside can digest all organic molecules found in cell, break down bacteria, viruses + toxins brought into cell via phagocytosis, self destrucion (activates autolysis)
What is CELL METABOLISM? Refers to all chemical processes that occur in the cell. Balance of 2 Types: Anabolsim: reactions that result in formation of more complex molecules and structures. CATABOLISM: Breaking down structures to produce building blocks for anabolic reactions.
What is an EMERGENT PROPERTY? give an example A property or function that emerges as a result of interactions between components. Eg: Pieces of a car in a box = nothing..... When put together in a certain way the car moves...movement is emergent property
What are the 7 Levels of Organization in the human body? 1) Atoms 2) Complex biological molecules 3) Cells 4) Tissues 5) Organs 6) Organ Systems 7 Complex Organism
What are the 6 Characteristics associated with life/living matter? 1) Order 2) Energy 3) Synthesize Complex Molecules 4) Repdofuction 5) Response to Environment 6) Adaptation
Describe the CELL MEMBRANE and its functions. Thin, oily skin that surrounds the cell. FUNCTION: Regulate what materials enter and leave the cell.
What is an ORGANIC COMPOUND? Always contains carbon, Often contains Hydrogen (Hydrogen bonds), Always contain covalent bonds (Eg. Carbohydrates, lipids, proteins)
What is an INORGANIC COMPOUND? Simple Structure, lack carbon (eg. water, salts, acids, bases)
Describe the ENDOPLASMIC RETICULUM and its functions. Rough ER: membranes studded with Ribosomes. Transport system: packages proteins for export from cell, produces cell membrane components for use by cell. SMOOTH ER: No ribosomes. Lipid synthesis, metabolism, transport, drug detoxification,
Describe the RIBOSOMES and their functions. Free Ribosomes: Float in Cytoplasm. produce protein used immediately by cell. ATTACHED RIBOSOMES: Attached to membranes of rough ER: produce proteins placed in cell membranes or exported from cell.
Describe the MITOCHONDRIA and its function. Bean - Shaped Structures. FUNCTION: Sites of cellular respiration, breaks down glucose and produces adenosine triphosphate (ATP) for cells to use as an energy source.
What are the 4 MOST COMMON elements found in the human body? Carbon, Oxygen, Hydrogen, Nitrogen
What is an IONIC bond? When one atom gains electrons and another loses electrons in outer valence shells so that both elements become more stable.
What is a COVALENT bond? When Atoms share electrons (neither loses or gains). The outer shells of both atoms achieve their stable number of electrons. (Eg. Water... H2O)

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
