NYS ES Topic 5
Energy in Earth's Processes
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Energy | the ability to do work |
| Electromagnetic energy | a type of energy that is radiated, or given off, in the form of transverse waves from all matter not at absolute zero |
| wavelength | the distance from one crest of a wave to the next crest |
| Electromagnetic spectrum | any model that shows the types of electromagnetic energy |
| Energy Refraction | energy bent, in their passage through materials of varying density so that the direction of the waves is changed |
| Energy Reflection | energy bounced off the material |
| Energy Absorption | energy taken into the material |
| Texture | the roughness or smoothness of a surface |
| Conduction | the transfer of heat energy from atom to atom or molecule when vibrating atoms or molecules collide |
| Convection | the transfer of heat by movement in fluids - gases and liquids- caused by differences in density within the fluids |
| Dynamic Equilibrium | heat will continue to move from the source to the sink until their energies are equal |
| Radiation | the method by which heat is transferred via electromagnetic waves |
| Mechanical Energy | all the energy of an object or system not related to the individual motions of atoms and molecules |
| Kinetic Energy | an object in motion that has energy |
| Potential Energy | energy related to position or phase |
| Temperature | a measure of the average kinetic energy of the particles of a body of matter - and is not a type of energy |
| Joules | a metric unit of energy or work |
| Specific Heat | the quantity of heat needed to raise the temperature of one gram of any substance one degree celsius |
| Melting | the changing of a solid to a liquid |
| Solidification (freezing) | the changing of a liquid to a solid |
| crystallization | if solidification results in a solid with an ordered pattern of atoms |
| Evaporation (vaporization) | the changing of a liquid to a gas |
| Condensation | the changing of a gas,or vapor, to a liquid |
| Sublimation | the changing of a gas directly to a solid |
| Nuclear Fusion | How the sun gets its energy, by combining the nuclei of smaller elements to form larger elements. Some mass is converted into energy. |
| Nuclear Decay | spontaneous breakdown of large unstable nuclei. Energy is released, but it’s not as much as nuclear fusion. |
