physical change Change that occurs within the state of matter
atom The smallest part of an element
solid Matter that has a definite volume and definite shape
liquid Matter that has a definite volume and no definite shape. Liquids takes the shape of their container.
gas Matter with no definite volume or definite shape
homogeneous mixture Two or more substances that are combined and cannot be separated into original parts
heterogeneous mixture Two or more substances that are combined and can be separated into original parts
What are the 3 base units in the Metric System? meter, liter, and gram
compound Two or more elements that are chemically combined to form a new substance
chemical change Change that results in a new material formed
What is something you might measure in Liters? soda or pool
What happens when you add energy to an ice cube? The ice cube melts
What unit would you use to measure the height of the flagpole outside the school? meter
What is something you might measure in grams? pencil or stapler
What happens with energy when water is frozen? The particles lose energy

What are the particles like at each state of matter? solid- closely packed liquid- farther apart and move faster than those in solid gas-particles are farther apart and move faster than those in a solid and liquid
