| Term | Definition |

| Mineral | a solid, non-living substance found in nature. Minerals are the building blocks of rocks. |
| Rock | a non-living substance made of one or more minerals. There are 3 main types of rocks. |
| Soil | a mixture of minerals, weathered rocks, and decayed plants and animal matter. |
| Renewable Resource | a resource that can be replaced or used again and again. |
| Non-Renewable Resource | a resource that cannot be replaced or reused easily. |
| Igneous Rock | a rock that forms when melted rock cools and hardens. Usually comes from a volcano. |
| Sedimentary Rock | a rock that forms from layers of sediment, dirt, and once living things pressed together over a long period of time. Usually forms under water. |
| Metamorphic Rock | a rock that is formed by heat and pressure deep in the Earth over a long period of time. |
| Fossil | the trace or remains of an organism that lived long ago. |
| Natural Resource | a material on Earth that is necessary or useful to people. |
| Solar Energy | energy from the Sun. |
