Vocabulary

TermDefinition
Extinction The state or process of a species, family, or larger group being or becoming extinct.
Biodiversity The variety of life in the world or in a particular habitat or ecosystem.
Genetic Diversity The total number of genetic characteristics in the genetic makeup of a species.
Species Diversity Measure of diversity in an ecological community.
Ecosystem Diversity The variety of ecosystems in a given place.
Background Extinction The standard rate of extinction in earth’s geological and biological history before humans became a primary contributor to extinctions.
Mass Extinction A relatively sudden, global decrease in the diversity of life forms
Natural Resource materials or substances such as minerals, forests, water, and fertile land that occur in nature and can be used for economic gain.
Habitat Fragmentation The process by which habitat loss results in the division of large, continuous habitats into smaller, more isolated remnants
Edge Effect Refers to the changes in population or community structures that occur at the boundary of two habitats
Biological Magnification Often refers to the process whereby certain substances such as pesticides or heavy metals move up the food chain, work their way into rivers or lakes, and are eaten by aquatic organisms
Eutrophication Excessive richness of nutrients in a lake or other body of water, frequently due to runoff from the land, which causes a dense growth of plant life and death of animal life from lack of oxygen
Introduced Species Is an organism that is not native to the place or area where it is considered introduced and instead has been accidentally or deliberately transported to the new location by human activity
