Cells Intro

TermDefinition
Characteristics of living things: MRSGREN Movement, respiration, stimuli, growth, reproduction, elimination, & nutrition
Movement To change location or position
Respiration The act or process of inhaling and exhaling; breathing
Stimuli Something that causes an organism to respond
Growth Change in size, often over a period of time
Reproduction Process by which new "offspring" organisms are produced from their "parents"
Elimination To get rid of; remove waste
Nutrition The provision, to cells and organisms, of the materials necessary in the form of food to support life (feed your cells)
3 parts of the cell theory 1. All organisms are mad of one or more cells 2. The cell is the basic unit of all organisms 3. All cells come from existing cells
Cell Smallest structure and functional unit of all living organisms
Organism Any living thing
Cell membrane A protective layer that covers the cell's surface and act as a barrier between the inside of the cell and the cell's environment "outside of the cell"
Cytoplasm Enclosed by the cell membrane and holds the fluid and all organelles "jelly like"
Organelle Small body in the cell's cytoplasm that has a special function "parts of a cell"
Nucleus Membrane bound organelle that contains the DNA "controls the cell"
Prokaryote Single celled organism that does not have a nucleus
Eukaryote An organism made of cells with DNA in the nucleus (examples are plants, animals, protist, and fungi)
Unicellular Made of one cell
Multicellular Made of many cells
Tissue Group of similar cells that perform a common function
Organ A structure made up of a collection of tissue that carry out a special function
Organ system A group of organs that work together to perform body functions
Hierarchy of cellular organization: small to large 1. Atoms 2. Molecules 3. Organelles 4. Cell 5. Tissue 6. Organ 7. Organ system 8. Organism

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
