Matter and Atomic Structure- Ch 3

TermDefinition
Element made up of atoms
atom smallest particle of an element and has all the characteristics of that element
nucleus center of an atom
proton found in the nucleus, has a positive charge
neutron found in the nucleus, has a neutral charge
atomic number number of protons in the nucleus
electron surrounds the nucleus of an atom, negative charge, very little mass
atomic mass sum of the protons and neutrons
radioactivity anything that gives off radiation
molecule two or more atoms held together by an attraction of electrons (covalent bonds)
evaporation change in state from liquid to a gas
crystalline structure particles of a solid are arranged in regular geometric patterns
sublimation change of state from solid to gas without an intermediate liquid state
plasma hot highly ionized electrically conducting gas
condensation change in state from gas becomes a liquid in cooling process
isotope atoms of an element which have a different number of neutrons
ion an atom tat gains or loses an electron and has a net electric charge
matter made of elements
compound substance composed of atoms of two or more different elements that are chemically combined
covalent bond attraction of two atoms for a shared pair of electrons that holds the atoms together
ionic bond attractive force between two or more ions of opposite charge
metallic bond ions of metal are held together by the attraction to negative electrons between them
chemical reaction the change of one or more substances into other substances
solution mixture where particles cannot be distinguished
acids solution which H+ ions are in water ph lower than 7

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.

To see how well you know the information, try the Quiz or Test activity.
