Scientific Investigation Grade 7

Steps in the Scientific Method 1. State the QUESTION. 2. Collect INFORMATION. 3. Form a HYPOTHESIS. 4. TEST the hypothesis. 5. RECORD and study the DATA. 6. Write a CONCLUSION.
Observation anything noticed using your 5 senses
Hypothesis an educated guess that you can test
Procedure the way an experiment is carried out
Conclusion a judgment based on observations
Repeated trials The number of times you repeat an experiment. The more times you repeat an experiment, the more valid the data becomes. You want to conduct the experiment as many times as possible.
Data the numbers, facts, or measurements obtained in an experiment
Independent variable the factor being tested or changed on purpose
Dependent variable the results or what is measured in the experiment
Constants factors in an experiment that must be kept the same
Inference idea or conclusion drawn from evidence and reasoning
