| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| SPEED | The rate at which an object moves |
| AVERAGE SPEED | speed = Distance/Time |
| VELOCITY | tells the rate an object moves AND in which direction it moves **Think of the air traffic controller |
| ACCELERATION | change in velocity (speed and direction) of an object |
| FORCE | In science the push or pull between an object |
| MASS | the amount of matter making up an object |
| INDEPENDENT VARIABLE | what you change in your experiment OR it's the variable that your testing |
| DEPENDENT VARIABLE | it changes the independent variable It's what we measure: the information you put in the data table *doesn't depend on anything else (stands alone) |
| INERTIA | (1) the tendency of ALL objects to RESIST a change in motion (2) the MORE mass an object has the MORE INERTIA it has |
| NEWTON'S FIRST LAW | effect of balanced and unbalanced forces on an object at rest and on an object in motion |
| NEWTON'S SECOND LAW | THe amount of force needed to accelerate an object. It depends upon the mass of the object |
| MASS V.S. WEIGHT | mass: does not change with location weight: it DOES change with location. A measure of the force of gravity |
| GRAVITY | A force that is pushing down It depends on Mass and distance acts vertically down |
