Atmosphere

Atmosphere Test Review

QuestionAnswer
What is atmosphere made of? contains gases (oxygen), solids (dust, pollen, salt), and liquids (water vapor)
Why is atmosphere important? creates perfect balance of heat on Earth for living things to survive; Also protects life forms from Sun's harmful rays
What organism first released Oxygen into the atmosphere ? cyanobacteria living in the ocean
What is the percentage of Nitrogen in the atmosphere? 78%
What is the percentage of Oxygen in the atmosphere? 21%
What is the percentage of Trace Gases in the atmosphere? 1%
How are we changing the atmosphere? releasing CFC's (chloroflourocarbons) and CO2 (carbon dioxide) into the atmosphere
Why should we limit the amount of CO2 released into the atmosphere? it is the #1 greenhouse gas (causes global warming)
Why are CFC's bad for the atmosphere? break down Ozone layer
How is atmospheric pressure (air pressure) related to altitude? higher altitude = lower air pressure
What tool is used to measure air pressure? barometer
How are layers of the atmosphere defined? abrupt changes in temperature due to solar energy absorption (each layer absorbs different amounts of heat)
What is the innermost layer of the atmosphere (closest to the surface of Earth)? Troposphere
In which layer of the atmosphere is weather located? Troposphere
In which layer is the Ozone layer found? Stratosphere
In which layer of the atmosphere do airplanes fly? Stratosphere
In which layer is the Ionosphere found and where meteroids start to burn? Mesosphere
In which layer of the atmosphere is the international space station found? Thermosphere
Which is the outermost layer of the atmosphere? (also considered "space") Exosphere
What part of the atmosphere protects us from ultraviolet radiation? Ozone Layer
What is Radiation? energy/heat transfered through rays/waves (Think "RAYdiation) (holding hands close to fire to warm them)
What is conduction? energy/heat transfered when molecules bump into one another (touch) (burner warming a pot)
what is Convection? energy/heat transfered through the flow of material (boiling water---cooler water sinks, hot water rises)
Why does warm air rise? molecules move apart making air less dense and "lighter"
Why does cold air sink? molecules are close together, more molecules in given area making the air "heavier"

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
