Chemical Digestion | Breakdown of food by enzymes (saliva) |
The mouth | Carries out physical and chemical digestion |
The oesophagus | Moves food to the stomach |
Liver | Makes bile which breaks down fats |
Pancreas | Makes enzymes which digest food |
1st part of small intestine | Breakdowns the food |
Stomach | Hydrochloric acid softens the food and kills bacteria. |
2nd part of small intestine | Allows the food to be absorbed from the intestine into the bloodstream. |
Incisors | Cut and slice food |
Canines | Grip and tear food |
Premolars & Molars | Chew, crush and grind food |
Enzymes | Proteins that speed up chemical reactions. substance produced= product substances acted on = substrate enzyme amylase acts on starch to produce a reducing sugar called maltose |
