| atmosphere | envelope of gases that surround the Earth |
| gases in our atmosphere | 78% Nitrogen from decaying plants and animals AND 21% Oxygen from plants |
| air pressure | the force of air molecules, measured with a barometer and decreases as you move up |
| troposhere | most of the mass of the atmosphere is here, we live here |
| stratosphere | the ozone layer is located here |
| mesosphere | coldest layer and meteor burn up here |
| thermosphere | split into two: ionosphere and exosphere |
| heat | the transfer of thermal energy from hot to cold |
| conduction | the transfer of heat by direct contact (touching) |
| convection | the transfer of heat by circulation of a liquid or gas (convection currents) |
| radiation | the transfer of heat by electromagnetic waves (sunlight changes into heat) |
| land vs. water | land heats up and cools down quicker than water |
| causes wind | unequal heating of the earth and air likes to move from cool to warm areas |
| local winds | winds that blow over short distances in small areas (land and sea breezes) |
| global winds | winds that blow steadily from specific distances over long periods of time, large areas |
