| observing | using one or more senses to gather information |
| inferring | explaining an observation |
| predicting | making a forecast of what will happen in the future |
| chemistry | the study of properties and matter |
| physics | the study of matter energy forces and motions |
| scientific inquiry | the ongoing process of discovery in science |
| parameter | a factor that can be measured in an experiment |
| hypothesis | a possible explanation for a set of observations or answer to a scientific question |
| manipulated variable | the one variable that changes during an experiment |
| responding variable | the variable parameter that changes as a result of changes to the manipulated or independent variable in an experiment |
| controlled variable | an investigation in which only one parameter is manipulated at a time |
| data | the facts figures and other evidence gathered in an observation |
| qualitative data | can be recorded as notes |
| quantitative data | quantitative consist of measurements |
| communicating | sharing ideas and and conclusions with others |
| model | a picture, diagram, computer image, representation of an object |
| scientific theory | a well tested explanation for a wide range of observations |
| scientific law | a statement that describes what should every time in an experiment |
| graph | a picture of your data |
| horizontal axis | the x axis that runs left to right on the bottom of the graph |
| vertical axis | the y axis that goes from zero up |
| origin | the point where the x and y axis both meet or (0,0) |
| coordinate | a pair of numbers to determine the position of a point on a graph |
| data point | point showing the location of the intersection |
| line of best fit | a smooth line that goes from the start to the finish on the graph |
| linear graph | a graph in which the data points yield in a straight line |
| slope | the steepness of the graph line |
| nonlinear graph | a line in which the data points do not fall along a straight line |
