Bio Terms 2.1

TermDefinition
Matter -Anything that occupies space and has mass.
Mass -The quantity of matter an object has.
Element -Substances that can't be broken down chemically into simpler kinds of matter.
Atom -The simplest particle of an element that retains all of the properties of that element.
Nucleus -The central region of an atom.
Proton -A positively charged particle within the atom.
Neutron -A particle without charge within the atom.
Atomic Number -The number of protons in an atom.
Mass Number -Is equal to the total number of protons and neutrons within the atom.
Electron -Negatively charged particles inside the atom.
Orbital - a three dimensional region around the nucleolus that indicates the probable location of an electron.
Isotope -Atoms of the same element that have different number of neutrons.
Compound -Made up of atoms of two or more elements.
Chemical Bond -The attractive forces that hold atoms together.
Covalent Bond -The bond between to atoms that share one or more pair of electrons.
Molecule -The simplest part of a substance that retains all properties of that substance and can exist in a free state.
Ion -An atom or molecule with an electrical charge.
Ionic Bond -The attractive bond between negatively and positively charged atoms.
