| culture | a people's way of life, including the kinds of tools they make, the food they eat, and language they speak |
| mesa | a flat-topped, steep-sided plateau |
| slash-and-burn | a method of farming in which trees and brush are burned to clear land for fields and villages |
| oral history | stories passed down by word of mouth from generation to generation |
| clan | a group of related people |
| anthropologist | a scientist who studies human culture |
| drought | a long period with no rain |
| Coastal Plain | broad, flat region in North Carolina that stretches 100 to 150 miles inland from the ocean |
| piedmont | hilly region between the Coastal Plain and the Appalachian Mountains |
