Ferg Plate Tectonics
Plate Tectonics Pg 89-101
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Pangaea | A single large landmass 245 million years ago. |
| Sea-floor Spreading | Molten rock from inside the Earth rises through cracks on the seafloor and cools to form new oceanic crust. |
| Uplift | Rising of the crust to higher elevations. |
| Subsidence | Sinking of parts of the crust to lower elevations. |
| Rift zone | An area where deep cracks form. Found where tectonic plates are moving apart. |
| Plate tectonics | Large scale movements of the Earth's lithosphere. |
| Tectonic plates | Pieces of the lithosphere that are broken up and move around on top of the asthenosphere. |
| Convergent boundaries | Form where tectonic plates collide or run into each other. |
| Divergent Boundaries | Plates that move away from each other or divide. |
| Transform boundaries | Place at which 2 plates move past each other horizontally. |
| Convection | Movement of material due to differences in density. Warm rises and cools sinks. |
| Hot spot | Location where a column of extremely hot rock -- a mantel plume-- rises through the asthenosphere. Hawaii is an example. |
