Earth Science chapter 27 vocab

TermDefinition
Electromagnetic spectrum arranged according to wavelength and frequency,
Refracting telescope used lenses to bring visible light to a focus.
Reflecting telescope Telescopes that bring visible light to a focus with mirrors
Interferometry technique that uses the images from several telescopes to produce a single image
Albedo percentage of incoming sunlight that its surface reflects
Highland heavily cratered regions of the moon that are in light color and mountainous
Mare dark, relatively smooth plains
Impact crater craters on the moon
Ejecta The material blasted out during these impacts fell back to the moons surface
Ray radiate outward from the impact site much like spokes on a bike wheel
Rille Valley like structures that might be collapsed lava tubes
Regolith breaking and heating of surface rocks and resulted in a layer of loose, ground up rock
Ecliptic plane the plane of earths orbit
Solstice the sun is overhead at its farthest distance either north or south of the equator
equinox Earths axis is perpendicular to the sun's rays and at noon the sun is directly overhead the equator
synchronous ratation The state at which its orbital and rotational periods are equal
Solar Eclipse Occurs when the moon passes directly between the sun and the earth and blocks the sun from view.
Perigee The closest point in the moons orbit to earth
Apogee The farthest point in the moons orbit to the earth
Lunar eclipse occurs when the moon passes behind Earth in relation to the sun
