What is a System? A system is a group of organs working together
Define 'Digest' To Break down large food particles into smaller food particles
Name three things we need food for Energy, Growth and Repair
How is food delivered from the mouth the cells? Via the blood stream
Name the 5 steps to provide nutrition to the body Ingestion, Digestion, Absorption, Assimilation and Egestion
Define ingestion Taking in food (eating)
Define digestion Breaking down the food
Define absorbtion The food passing into the blood system
Define Assimilation The food being put to use by the cell (energy, growth, repair)
Define Egestion Passing of any unabsorbed food as faeces.
Name the organs in the human body Mouth, Oesophagus, Stomach, Small intestine, Large intestine(colon), Salivary glands, Liver, Gall Bladder and Pancreas
Functions of the mouth (3) Take in food, Crush food(teeth), Introduce Amylase via salivary glands
What is Amylase? Enzyme that breaks down starch to sugar (maltose)
What is an Enzyme? A chemical produced by living organisms that speeds up chemical reactions
Define Peristalsis A muscular movement that pushes food along the digestive system. Only occurs in the digestive system.
