| solar system | consists of an average star we call the Sun, the planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto |
| galaxy | a system of millions or billions of stars, together with gas and dust, held together by gravitational attraction |
| planet | a celestial body moving in an elliptical orbit around a star. |
| ligth year | a unit of astronomical distance equivalent to the distance that light travels in one year |
| star | a fixed luminous point in the night sky that is a large, remote incandescent body like the sun |
| universes | all existing matter and space considered as a whole; the cosmos. The universe is believed to be at least 10 billion light years in diameter and contains a vast number of galaxies |
| luminosty | the intrinsic brightness of a celestial object (as distinct from its apparent brightness diminished by distance |
| appernet magnuitude | the magnitude of a celestial object as it is actually measured from the earth |
| absolute magnitude | the magnitude (brightness) of a celestial object as it would be seen at a standard distance of 10 parsecs. |
