| Galaxy | a system of millions or billions of stars |
| Planet | Massive planets significantly more massive than the terrestrials: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. |
| Light year | a long distance or great amount. |
| Star | Remote incandescent body like the sun. |
| Universe | all existing matter and space considered as a whole |
| Luminosity | the intrinsic brightness |
| Apparent magnitude | the magnitude of a celestial object |
| Absolute magnitude | the magnitude of a celestial object as it would be seen at a standard distance |
