Classifying Animals
| Term | Definition |

| classify | to put things in groups based on similar characteristics |
| vertebrates | animals with backbones |
| invertebrates | animals that have no backbones or lack internal structure |
| cold-blooded | an animal that must rely on external heat to control their body temperature |
| warm-blooded | an animal whose blood temperature stays constant (the same) regardless of the environment. Can regulate/maintain their own body temperature |
| birds | vertebrates that are warm-blooded and have lungs. They are covered in feathers, most fly, and lay eggs |
| reptiles | vertebrates that have scaly skin, mostly lay eggs, and are cold-blooded. Many live near water, but lay eggs on land |
| amphibians | a vertebrate that begins life in water with gills, but grows to live part of the time on land and breathe with lungs. Lay eggs in water |
| mammals | vertebrates that have complex nervous systems and large brains. They have fur or hair and feed milk to their young |
| fish | vertebrates that are cold-blooded, have gills, and live in water |
| taxonomy | the science of naming and classifying animals |
| dichotomous key | a TOOL used to identify organisms based on contrasting characteristics |
| kingdom | the broadest level of biological classification |
