Disturbance What causes waves to begin by causing the particles to vibrate through a medium.
Medium The type of matter a wave moves move through.
Wave A disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another.
Transverse A wave in which the particles move perpendicularly to the direction the wave travels. (up & down)
Crest The highest point of a wave.
Trough The lowest point of a wave.
Longitudinal A wave in which the particles move back and forth in the same direction the wave travels.
Compression Point in the medium through which a wave is traveling that has the highest density (particles are closest together/bunched up)
Rarefaction Point in the medium through which a wave is traveling that has the lowest density (particles are farthest apart/spread out)
Equilibrium The resting point of a wave.
Amplitude The measure of how far the particles in the medium move away from their normal rest position.
Wavelength The distance from any point on a wave to an identical point on the next wave.
