---|---|
Disturbance | What causes waves to begin by causing the particles to vibrate through a medium. |
Medium | The type of matter a wave moves move through. |
Wave | A disturbance that transfers energy from one place to another. |
Transverse | A wave in which the particles move perpendicularly to the direction the wave travels. (up & down) |
Crest | The highest point of a wave. |
Trough | The lowest point of a wave. |
Longitudinal | A wave in which the particles move back and forth in the same direction the wave travels. |
Compression | Point in the medium through which a wave is traveling that has the highest density (particles are closest together/bunched up) |
Rarefaction | Point in the medium through which a wave is traveling that has the lowest density (particles are farthest apart/spread out) |
Equilibrium | The resting point of a wave. |
Amplitude | The measure of how far the particles in the medium move away from their normal rest position. |
Wavelength | The distance from any point on a wave to an identical point on the next wave. |
Frequency | How many cycles of a wave occur in a given amount of time. |
Hertz | The unit of frequency; equal to one cycle per second. |
