Rocks
Earth Science
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Moltent Rock | Magma or Lava |
| Magma | hot fluid or semifluid material inside a volcano |
| Lava | Has already erupted and is above ground |
| Mineral | A mineral is a naturally occurring, inorganic, solid, crystalline structured, indefinitely chemically compositioned material. |
| Compaction | The process that presses sediments together |
| Igneous Rock | A rock that is formed by the cooling of molten rock |
| Sedimentary Rock | A rock with sediments that are compacted and cemented to form strata or layers |
| Foliated | Visible lines or bands |
| Nonfoliated | Non-visible lines or bands |
| Rock | A solid material which has small minerals inside of it |
| Errosion | Occurs when running water or wind loosen and carry away fragments of rock |
| Weathering | When something changes it's feel or look |
| Cementation | The process in which desolved minerals crystalize and glue particles of sediment together |
| Chemical Sedimentary Rock | This rock forms when liquid dissolves and leaves mineralized Crystals behind |
| Sediment | Small solid pieces of material that come from rocks or living things |
| Deposition | A process by which sediment settles out of the water or wind carrying it |
| Metamorphic Rock | Rocks that have changes shape through heat and pressure |
| Clastic Sedimentary Rock | This rock only contains fragments that are squeezed together |
| Organic Sedimentary Rock | This rock contains rock fragments and once living plant/animal remains |
| Rock Cycle | The time period in which the rock can turn into a metamorphic, sedimentary, or ingenious rock |
