Body Planes and Cavities

Sagittal Plane Longitude cut that divides the body into a right and left side
Midsagittal Plane Cuts down the middle of the back and divides the body into two equal halves
Frontal Plane Longitude cut that divides the body into a front (anterior) and back (posterior) portion
Transverse Plane Horizontal cut that divides the body into a top (superior) and bottom (inferior) half
Thoracic Cavity A ventral cavity that is located at the chest; it includes the heart and lungs
Abdominal Cavity A ventral cavity that includes the organs of the digestive system
Pelvic Cavity A ventral cavity that includes the organs of the urinary and reproductive system
Abdominopelvic Cavity Another name for the abdominal and pelvic cavities together (Ventral)
Ventral Cavity Cavities in the front of the body; includes the thoracic, abdominal and pelvic
Cranial Cavity A dorsal cavity that includes the brain
Spinal Cavity A dorsal cavity that includes the spinal cord
Dorsal Cavity Cavities in the back of the body that include the cranial and spinal cavity
