Chordates & Fishes

Phylum Chordata chordates; an animal that has , for least stage of its life a dorsal, hollow nerve cord; a notochord; pharyngeal pouches; and a tail that extends beyond the anus
Notochord a large supporting rod that runs through the body just below the nerve cord
Pharyngeal Pouches are paired structures in the throat region; develop gills
Vertebrae individual segments that enclose and protect the spinal cordd
Cartilage a strong tissue that supports the body and is softer & more flexible than bone
Atrium a large muscular chamber that serves as a one-way compartment for blood that is about to enter the ventricle
Cerebrum responsible for all the voluntary activities of the body
Cerebellum coordinates body movements
Medulla Oblongata controls functioning of many internal organs
Lateral Line System Fishes can detect gentle currents and vibrations in the water with sensitive receptors
Swim Bladder internal, gas filled organ that adjusts their buoyancy
Oviparous fishes whose eggs hatch outside the mothers body
Ovoviviparous species such as guppies the eggs stay inside the mother's body after internal fertilization
Viviparous the embryos stay in the mother's body after internal fertilization
Cloaca at the end of the large intestine is a muscular cavity
Nictitating Membrane surface of the eye is protected from damage under water and kept moist on land by a transparent membrane
Tympanic Membranes amphibians hear through a structure or ear drums
Pyloric Ceca digestive enzymes
Olfactory bulbs sense of smell or olfraction
Optic Lobes process information from the eyes
Jawless Fishes Lamypeys or hagfishes; filter feeders as larvae parasitic as adults
Cartilaginous Fishes: Class- Chrondrichthyes sharks, rays, skates; flexible tissue, tooth like scales, large curved tail, thousands of teeth and torpedo shaped body
Bony Fishes: Class Osteichthyes ray finned fishes and hard lobe finned fishes; hard tissue and some bones are jointed
Diffusion through Gills & Kidneys both used to get rid of waste
Anadromous fish that can live in saltwater and breed in freshwater
Catadromous fish that can live in freshwater and breed in saltwater
