classify to put things into groups based on similiarities
taxonomy the science of classifying and naming organisms
binomial nomenclature the "two-name naming-system" used in science to name organisms, invented by Linnaeus
dichotomous key two choice method of finding the name of an organism, comes in two forms: list and branching tree
common name the name people call an organism on an every-day basis, the name varies based on where you live
scientific name the name used by scientists to refer to an organism using binomial nomenclature
field guide a book with descriptions, pictures/diagrams, and dichotomous keys used to identify organisms
unicellular adjective to describe an organism made of only one cell
multicellular adjective to describe an organism made of more than one cell
heterotrophic adjective to describe an organism that has to eat to get its energy
autotrophic adjective to describe an organism that makes its own food by doing photosynthesis
asexual adjective to describe an organism that can produce offspring all by itself
sexual adjective to describe an organism that needs two parents to produce offspring
producer organism whose role in the ecosystem is to make its own food
consumer organism whose role in the ecosystem is to eat other organisms
decomposer organism whose role in the ecosystem is to break down dead organisms
phylogeny the evolutionary history of an organism
prokaryotic adjective to describe an organism whose cell(s) have no nucleus
eukaryotic adjective to describe an organism whose cell(s) have a nucleus
locomotion movement from place to place
cilia hair-like structures extending from a cell that wave in the water (a form of locomotion)
flagellum whip-like tail extending from a cell (a form of locomotion)
pseudopod "false foot," a blob-like extension of the cell membrane and cytoplasm of a cell (a form of locomotion)
