| upwelling | cold water along the ocean bottom rises carrying nutrients to the surface |
| El Nino | unusual warming of the ocean off the coast of Peru |
| turbidity | measure of the amount of particles suspended in water |
| bioindicators | living organisms used to determine the health of a body of water |
| polarity | property of water in which each end of the molecule has a slight charge |
| cohesion | force that holds molecules of water together |
| adhesion | attractive force between water and other substances it comes in contact with |
| desalination | removing salt from ocean water |
| sonar | using sound waves bounced off the seafloor to determine depth |
