| upstream | where the water starts in a watershed |
| downstream | where the water goes TO in a river |
| freshwater | water with no salt; bayous, rivers, lakes, ponds |
| salt water | ocean water; contains salt |
| brackish water | mix of salt and fresh water |
| refinery | separates crude oil into products; these are at the Port of Houston |
| drill bit | equipment that breaks rock when creating an oil well; covered in diamonds |
| drill rig | equipment that creates oil well |
| horsehead pump | equipment that pulls oil up from the well |
| injection well | water is sent down this well to push oil |
| production well | oil comes up from this well |
| nonrenewable | resource can't be created in a human life time |
| dissolved oxygen | oxygen molecules between water molecules; fish need this to live |
| fertilizers | chemicals that make plants grow; contain nitrates and phosphates |
| nitrates | a form of nitrogen that plants use to grow |
| point source pollution | can be easily identified; you know where the pollution is coming from |
| nonpoint source pollution | comes from many spread out locations; hard to control |
| recharge zone | area of land which refills an aquifer |
| aquifer | layers of rock which contain fresh water |
| water conservation | saving water |
| desalination | taking salt out of ocean water to use it |
