Review of terms and vocabulary for evolution

TermDefinition
Evolution the gradual change of a species over time
Charles Darwin the British naturalist who developed the theory of evolution after his travels to the Galopogas Islands
Adaptations a structures or behavior that helps an organism to survive and reproduce in its environment
Variation the differences in a species due to thier genetic code
Mutations inheritable changes in DNA that can be favorable or unfavorable
Natural Selection the survival and reproduction of individuals with traits that enable them to better survive in their environment
Geologic Time a timeline used to show the earth's 4.6 billon year history
Fossil a preserved record of organisms that lived in the past
Mold the empty space left in the rock from a fossil
Cast when a fossil gets filled with hardened minerals
Relative Dating used to determine the approximate age of fossils by looking at the layers of rock (the oldest are at the bottom)
Absolute or Radioactive Dating used to determine the approximate age of fossils by looking at the layers of rock (the oldest are at the bottom)
Homologous Structures similar body parts organisms may have inherited from a common ancestor
Evolutionary Tree a diagram used to the evolutionary relationships between organisms
