TermDefinition
Solar System Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune
Axis An Imaginary line that runs through the planet's north and south poles
Rotation To spin. The Sun, Earth (24 days) and Moon (28 days) all spin on their axis.
Revolution To orbit or go around. The Earth (365 days) and the Moon (28 days) both revolve
Day and Night Caused by the Earth's Rotation
Seasons The tilt of the Earth as it revolves around the sun causes seasons.
Moon Phases As the Moon revolves around the Earth, we see different parts of the moon in the sky. It takes one week from each major phase to the next or 4 weeks for a full cycle.
Sunrise/Sunset The sun rises in the East, and sets in the West
Tides Caused by the Moon's gravity. 2 high tides, and 2 low tides a day.
Gravity An object's pull. All objects in space have gravity. The more mass an object has, the more gravity it will have.
Evaporation Caused by the sun's heat. Liquid to gas.
Condensation When water cools in the atmosphere. Gas to liquid.
Precipitation Rain, sleet, snow, or hail.
Runoff The movement of water over the Earth's surface.
Groundwater Water located beneath the Earth's surface.
Weather Conditions at a specific time such as temperature, cloud cover, wind speed, and rainfall.
Climate Weather patterns of a larger area over a long period of time. not very specific.
Inner Planets Rocky Planets inside the asteroid belt.
Outer Planets Gas Planets outside the asteroid belt.
