The Hydrosphere

Water A compound that covers over 71 percent of earths surface, 96 percent of all water is ocean water
Hydrosphere All the waters on earths surface
River Basin The portion of land drained by a river and its tributaries
Tributary A river or stream flowing into a larger river or lake
Watershed An area of land that drains into a stream, river, lake, or any other body of water
Surface Water Water that collects on the surface of the ground
Groundwater The water that collects underground
Aquifer A body of permeable rock that can contain or transmit groundwater
Water Cycle The movement of water between Earth and the sky
Evaporation The process of water turning into a gas
Transpiration When plants release water and it evaporates
Condensation The process of water turning from a gas to a liquid
Precipitation When water falls from clouds in the forms of rain, snow, sleet, and hail
Infiltration When rain water on the surface of Earth enters the small pore spaces between particles of soil or rock
Runoff The flow of excess water on earths surface
Porosity The quality of having many tiny holes
Cohesion The sticking together of particles of the same substance
Adhesion The action or process of sticking to a surface or object
Density The degree of compactness of a substance
Universal Solvent A solvent that dissolves many substances
