Water/Hydrosphere

TermDefinition
Water/H2O a molecule that contains two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen atom; often called “the universal solvent”
Hydrosphere all of the water on, under, and above the Earth
River Basin The land drained by a river and its tributaries
Tributary Tiny rivers that lead into a big river
Watershed The area around a river
Surface water Water on the surface of the Earth
Groundwater water stored below Earth's surface in soil and rock layers
Aquifer A collection of water beneath Earth's surface
Water Cycle the continual movement of water between the land, ocean, and the air
Evaporation the process in which matter changes from a liquid to a gas
Transpiration the process in plants by which water is taken up by the roots and released as water vapor through stomata in the leaves
Condensation to turn from a gas into a liquid
Precipitation water that is released from clouds in the sky; includes rain, snow, sleet, hail, and freezing rain
Infiltration the process in which water that is on the ground begins to be absorbed by the soil
Runoff Water that runs along the surface of the Earth
Porosity Measure of empty spaces in a material
Polarity in earth science, having to do with the areas on Earth closest to the geographic North or South poles
Cohesion the sticking together of particles of the same substance
Adhesion the sticking together of particles of different substances
Surface Tension In the bulk of the liquid, each molecule is pulled equally in every direction by neighboring liquid molecules, resulting in a net force of zero.
Density an object's mass divided by its volume; a measure of how many particles are packed together into a certain amount of space
Specific Heat the amount of heat per unit mass required to raise the temperature by one degree Celsius
Heat of Vaporization the quantity of heat that must be absorbed if a certain quantity of liquid is vaporized at a constant temperature
Universal Solvent substance that is able to dissolve (almost) all other substances; water is commonly referred to as the universal solvent
