Freshwater Biome

These concepts are important to know. Become an intelligent water user!

QuestionAnswer
The Water Cycle The movement of water through evaporation, condensation, and precipitation.
Ground Water Water in soil and rock (underground). 20% of freshwater is found this way.
Water Conservation Using water saving methods to help reduce the amount of water needed for homes, farms, and businesses.
Water Pollution Any contamination of water that reduces its usefulness to humans, plants, and animals in nature.
Point Pollution Pollution that comes from a single point and enters that water directly. An example of this would be a pipe dumping waste materials into a stream.
Non Point Pollution Pollution that comes from a large area but does not enter the water directly. An example of this would be salt on a parking lot washing into the soil before going into a stream or ground water.
Landfill A large outdoor area where we put our wastes.
Sanitary Landfill A landfill where waste is layered with soil and then covered with soil.
Biodegradable Anything that will break down and fall apart naturally.
Hazardous Waste Any garbage that can harm humans, animals, and plants.
Water Table The upper area of ground water.
Leachate Water that enters a landfill dissolves some of the garbage and exist the landfill as contaminated water. If leachate isn’t collected it will enter the water table.
Decompose To decay and fall apart naturally, to rot.
Atmosphere Gases that surround Earth.
Water Vapor Water in a gas state
Ice Cap A thick sheet of ice covering a large area of land
Soil Water Water that soaks into the soil
Evaporation When liquid changes to a gas
Condensation When a gas changes to a liquid
Cloud Tiny drops of condensed water in the atmosphere
Precipitation Water in the atmosphere that falls to Earth as rain, snow, hail, or sleet
Freeze When moving particles in a liquid slow down, lose heat, and change to a solid
