| Human Impact | includes impacts on biophysical environments, biodiversity, and other resources. |
| Environmental Pollution | the introduction into the biosphere of materials that because of their quantity, chemical nature, or temperature have a negative impact on the ecosystem or that cannot be readily disposed of by natural recycling processes |
| Hazardous Waste | Any material that can be harmful to human health or the environment if it is not properly disposed of |
| Recycling | Collecting and reprocessing a resource or product to make into new products |
| human population growth | measures how populations change in size over time. |
| Nonrenewable Resources | a resource of economic value that cannot be readily replaced by natural means on a level equal to its consumption. |
| Renewable Resources | is a substance of economic value that can be replaced or replenished in the same amount or less time as it takes to draw the supply down. |
| thermal pollution | the introduction of heated water into the environment, with consequent adverse effects on aquatic life |
| acid rain | rain containing acids produced by water chemically combined with certain gases |
| conservation | wise use of natural resources |
| desalination | process of getting fresh water from salt water |
| natural resource | material from earth that is used by living things |
| nuclear energy | energy produced by splitting or combining atoms |
| pollutant | harmful substance in the environment |
| sewage | wastes usually flushed away in water |
