Ruggiero Chapter 2

SHORT ANSWER responses

QuestionAnswer
How are xylem and phloem alike and different? Both are vascular tissues and used for transporting materials in a plant. Xylem is different because it transports water and minerals from the roots. Phloem is different because it transports food (sugar) from the leaves to the rest of the plant.
Explain how roots get the food they need. Roots spread out and down into the soil. They contain tiny hairs that have cells that pull in water from the soil and carry water and minerals up into the stem and to the leaves where photosynthesis takes place.
Compare and contrast the characteristics of vascular and non-vascular plants. Contrast- vascular plants have specialized tissues: xylem and phloem that transport food and water, and a true root system. Non-vascular do not have these tissues. Compare- Both use photosynthesis and contain cell walls and chloroplasts
Explain how photosynthesis and cell respiration work together in plants to provide the energy for life and growth. P - uses energy from the sun to make food (carbohydrate-sugar)in chloroplasts. CR- breaks down food in mitochondria for energy. Plants use cell resp when photosynthesis slows down due to less sun so they get the energy they need to grow
Compare and contrast angiosperms and gymnosperms Compare-both reproduce with seeds and use photosysnthesis Contrast - (A)-flowering plant. Fruit. Very abundant. (G)-no flowers produced, evergreen, such as pine trees
How do roots, stems, and leaves work together to maintain life in a vascular plant? The roots absorb water and minerals into xylem and anchor plant down. Stems transport the water/minerals in xylem to leaves. Leaves use the water for photosynthesis to create food in chloroplasts. Phloem is found in all 3 and used to transport food.
