What are tectonic plate boundaries? a boundary between two or more plates.
What is an epicenter? point on Earth's surface vertically above the focus of an earthquake.
What is an elastic rebound? an explanation for how energy is spread during earthquakes.
What is the focus? center of the earthquake.
What is a deformation? process of changing in shape or distorting, especially through the application of pressure.
What is a volcano? a mountain or hill having a crater or vent through which lava, rock fragments, hot vapor, and gas are being or have been erupted from the Earth's crust.
What is a vent? opening at Earth's surface from which volcanic material is emitted.
What is magma? hot fluid or semi-fluid below or within the Earth's crust from which lave and other igneous rock is formed by cooling.
What are tectonic plates? the two sub-layers of the Earth's crust that move, float, and sometimes fracture and whose interaction causes continental drift, earthquakes, volcanoes, mountains, and oceanic trenches.
What is lava? hot, molten, or semifluid rock that erupts from a volcano or fissure, or solid rock resulting from cooling of this lava.
What is a hot spot? these are volcanic regions thought to be fed by underlying mantle that is anomalously hot compared with the surrounding mantle. They may be on, near to, or far away from tectonic plate boundaries.
What is an earthquake? a sudden and violent shaking of the ground, sometimes causing great destruction, as a result of movements within the Earth's crust of volcanic action.
