| Term | Vocabulary |
|---|---|
| ruler (metric) | a tool used to measure the length of an object. Common units are um=micrometers(microns), mm=millimeters, cm=centimeters & m=meters |
| micrometers (microns) | a small unit (1/1000 of a mm) used to measure the length of an object using a microscope. |
| graduated cylinder | a tool often used to measure a liquid's volume. Remember to take your measurement from the bottom of the meniscus. |
| volume | amount of space an object occupies. |
| temperature | "usually" measured in degrees Celsius. Remember 0 degrees C = freezing, 37 degrees C = body temperature and 100 degrees C = boiling |
| mass | amount of matter in an object. Kilograms and grams are common units. |
| balance (triple-beam or electronic) | a tool used to measure the mass of an object. |
| microscope | a tool that uses a lens or lenses to enlarge the image of an object. |
| magnification | how much the microscope enlarges the image of an object. To calculate MULTIPLY the eyepiece(ocular) TIMES the current object being used. |
| stereo or dissecting microscope | a tool that has 2 lenses (hence stereo) and uses low magnification (10-20X's) to increase the viewability of a specimen you are dissecting. |
| compound microscope | a tool that has one lens and we will commonly use to view the largest organelles within cells. |
| microscope image (only compound) | the enlarged image will be upside- down and backwards. |
| eyepiece or ocular | lens or lenses that you view image through. In compound microscope is usually 10X's. |
| Objective lenses | lens closest to the object, usually attached to revolving nosepiece and contains 4X scanning, 10X low power an 40X high power. |
| diaphragm | located under stage and contols the amount of light or intensity. |
| course adjustment knob | a large knob used only on low power to coarsely focus. |
| fine adjustment knob | a small knob used on any power to sharpen the focus and allows the viewer to focus on different levels. |
| gel electrophoresis | a technique used to SEPERATE either DNA or proteins BY SIZE. |
| chromatography | a technique used to SEPERATE a mixture of molecules. We used this process to SEPERATE leaf pigments. |
| indicators | a substance that changes color when it comes in contact with a specific substance. |
| Iodine (Lugol's) solution | an indicator for starch turns from amber to dark blue-black AND a stain. We used this stain to view onion cells. |
| Benedict's Blue Solution | an indicator that turns orangish to brick red when in the presence of glucose. Must heat this one to see a reaction. |
| Stain | is used to enhance (stain) the organelles within cells. The trade-off for increased viewability is the stain kills the cells. |
| methylene blue | a stain we used to view our cheek cells |
| Dichotomous Key | a key used to classify organisms based on characteristics. |
